Food for Transitioning

Haley Yum

I was a nervous wreck when Haley began her transition time and would not eat her usual raw diet. I now know that this is the body’s natural process and I do wish I would have been less stressed. It was frustrating, sad and I knew what it signaled. Thankfully, I had the support of her conventional vet and loved ones who offered suggestions.

These list of foods to try when your dog won’t eat includes items that proved to be appetizing enough to take a nibble, which not only gave her some nutrition, but put my mind and heart at ease. Choose organic when possible.

  • Boiled potato
  • Canned tuna
  • Cottage cheese
  • Crusty bread
  • Dehydrated cod
  • Dehydrated/dry roasted buffalo liver
  • Organic baby food (chicken or turkey)
  • Plain baked chicken
  • Plain extra-firm tofu
  • Plain cooked pasta
  • Plain white or brown rice
  • Raw almond butter
  • Raw beef liver
  • Raw colostrum
  • Raw goat’s milk
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Sauteed ground beef, chicken or turkey

  1. I also tried many food items when my Casey had no appetite as a result of lymphoma and chemo treatments. I began with the vets reasonably healthy suggestions then offered her absolutely anything I could think of so she would have at least a morsel or two that day. Things she attempted were: specialty canned dog food, boiled or sauteed chicken breast, baby food, chicken thighs, steak, sliced turkey breast, cheese. Most popular though, meaning she liked it more than once, were fresh sliders with cheese.

What do you think?
