Two great sites I found at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine Nutrition Support Service that can help you make the most healthful food for your best friend.
I’d love to hear about your experience if you try them out!
PetDiets was founded in 1989 (online since 2000) by Rebecca L. Remillard, DVM, Ph.D., MS, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, I like PetDiets because it’s an independent nutritional consulting service. They aren’t tied to any food company and do not sell any products.
You’ll need to create a free account to build a diet with their interactive tool ($25). Be prepared to input information on your pet and her vet, too. Or get a consult for your pet with cancer for $250. You can also ask an ACVN Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist a question for free. Search “cancer” and find some good info.
In placing the pet’s nutritional health first, VNC draws upon a vast number of products, supplements, and services available to the pet owner. We have the unique opportunity to link the pet owner with current scientific knowledge on nutrition and 20+ yrs of clinical experience for the betterment of their pet and the bond between them. We offer independent advice and expertise that brings together the science of nutrition with the art of clinical practice. We provide customized recipes for healthy pets, independent nutrition consultations for pets with medical conditions, and and an extensive library of nutrition information for pet owners.”
Free Online Recipe Generator
Balance IT started in 2003 by Sean Delaney, DVM, MS, DACVN, a board certified veterinary nutritionist formerly with UC Davis and previous board chair of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
Use the free online recipe generator or Autobalancer EZ from the Homemade Food tab. Here’s how it works. The company also sells custom formulas (and suggests their own supplements when it finds deficiencies based on the recipe you make):
Unlike most recipes online or even in books, Balance IT formulates every recipe to the specific pet’s or patient’s nutritional needs. This means that approximately 40 separate important nutrients are evaluated in every recipe generated. We simply will not generate a recipe if the formulated levels of a nutrient are too low or too high for a pet or patient. It also means that our products are designed specifically for and only to be used with precisely formulated homemade pet food recipes. Finally, it means that our recipes and products are supported by caring and experienced board certified veterinary nutritionists.”
